Feed Your Heart – Travelling Well.
Over the New Year we traveled south to two of the most un spoilt islands in Thailand. Their laid-back pace and focus on sustainability made it the perfect place to re-energize. It is estimated there will be 1.6mn global tourists by 2020 so reducing the impact of our adventures is key if we are going to preserve these unique locations.
Here are some great tips for travelling ‘light’ this year
Pick up a paddle – Investigate slower methods of travel for other parts of your journey, sleeper trains run across South East Asia. Don’t be tempted by coral destroying speedboats, hop into a kayak you can get into the most interesting places in a small boat and it’s a great workout
Ban the Straw – Say not to straws, I get that when you are off the beaten path they are a good way of reducing the risk of picking up stomach bugs from dirty glasses so pack your own. Kleen Kanteen do a great range. From the 1st of January the Anantara and Avani hotel group have proudly banned the use of plastic straws across their hotels, opting instead to partner with a social enterprise in the north of Thailand to create bamboo straws.
Be a Trash Hero – Across Asia there is a great initiative called Trash Heroes. You can find them at TrashHeroes.Org when travelling to Koh Mak you will see a team of willing volunteers in their yellow t-shirts spending their Saturday mornings cleaning up the island.
Go ‘Coconuts’ – The perfect way to stay hydrated and reduce the amount of plastic bottle waste, opt for coconut water straight from the tree. If you are heading to the mountains or more temperate climates pack your water bottle.
